Tamara Lizette Brown is professor of history and director of women’s studies at Bowie State University. Dr. Brown received her doctoral degree in history through the Department of History, Howard University. Tamara Brown worked as a cultural historian with the Smithsonian Institution and was a co-editor of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History’s Black History Bulletin. She is the co-editor of Soul Thieves: The Appropriation and Misrepresentation of African American Popular Culture (Palgrave), an editor of the revised editions of the two-volume textbook A Constant Struggle: Documents and Readings in African American History (Kendall/Hunt), and the project director of several projects with the National Park Service. As a cultural historian, specializing in African American expressive culture, popular culture, and the performing/vernacular arts, Dr. Tamara L. Brown advocates for the historical analysis of dance, culture, and the arts as history—how dance and other cultural forms inform the historical record.
